UK PM Andy Burnham rules out early election and says he puts Britain first
Burnham, Britain’s seventh prime minister in a decade, said he would not call out US President Donald Trump and framed his role as defending the UK’s national interests.
Britain’s new Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he will “always” put Britain’s interests first when asked about whether he would challenge US President Donald Trump, in his first major interview since taking office, according to SCMP Economy.
Burnham was asked by BBC journalist Laura Kuenssberg if he would call out Trump if he believed it was the right thing to do. Burnham responded that leaders must defend their own national interest and said, “I’m going to rule it out,” while Trump this week described his conversation with Burnham as “very good.”
The interview also referenced the prior relationship between Burnham’s predecessor, Keir Starmer, and Trump, which was described as fraught due to disagreements over the US-Israeli war on Iran, immigration, energy, and tech regulation.
Burnham also ruled out an early general election, saying there would be no early vote and that he does not think people want it. He became prime minister on Monday.
