WEMIX halts bridges after attacker moves about $724,000 in USDC.e

WEMIX said the attacker issued about 5.23 million WEMIX tokens, converted 724,198.27 USDC.e, then bridged the funds to Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain.

WEMIX said it temporarily suspended bridges, liquidity-pool trading, and several services after an attacker compromised a contract linked to its WEMIX$ stablecoin and carried out unauthorized token movements.

According to a preliminary incident update, abnormal transactions began Sunday at 9:17 UTC, when the attacker issued about 5.23 million WEMIX, converted that into 30,736 WEMIX, and moved 724,198.27 USDC.e tokens. WEMIX said the USDC.e was bridged to Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain before being exchanged for assets including Ether and Tether’s USDT.

WEMIX added that some of the funds were deposited into centralized exchanges, and it identified the attacker’s wallets while requesting asset freezes and assistance from exchanges and stablecoin issuers. The company said some exchanges had already frozen addresses tied to the incident.

WEMIX also temporarily suspended all bridges connected to its layer-1 network, WEMIX3.0, including Chainlink CCIP and the PLAY Bridge, withdrew foundation-provided liquidity, and paused services such as the WEMIX$ Module and PNIX decentralized exchange. The company said the cause and full impact are still under investigation and the preliminary figures could change.
