Armed officers set for Brighton and Hove Pride after Berlin attack
The deployment follows a Berlin Pride attack that killed one person and injured at least 29 others, and Sussex Police said it will coordinate with event organizers and the city council.
Armed officers will be deployed for the UK’s biggest Pride festival in Brighton and Hove after an attack on Berlin’s Pride event, police said, citing heightened security needs in the wake of the violence.
The suspect, named as Abdul B and said to have links to Islamic State, was shot dead by police on Sunday after being on the run for nearly 24 hours, according to SCMP Economy. The attacker was suspected of driving a van into festivalgoers in Berlin, killing one person, and then stabbing others with a machete.
Brighton and Hove Pride is scheduled to take place about a week after the Berlin attack and is expected to draw an estimated 500,000 people to the city, SCMP Economy reported.
Sussex Police said it will work with event organizers, Brighton and Hove City Council, and other partners to build on extensive planning carried out over many months and maintain an effective policing operation for the event.
