Brazil and China agree to speed up Mercosur trade talks

Leaders also discussed cooperation in sectors including artificial intelligence, satellites, critical-minerals processing, and fertiliser trade.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva agreed to accelerate negotiations for a Mercosur-China trade agreement, marking a shift from years of resistance by Brasilia to such a deal, according to SCMP Economy.

SCMP Economy reports the leaders spoke by telephone for more than an hour, and the Brazilian presidency said they emphasized the importance of speeding up talks and incorporating necessary flexibilities into the framework.

The readout also said both presidents discussed aligning their national development projects and reaffirmed plans to expand cooperation in strategic and high-technology sectors, including artificial intelligence, satellites, critical-minerals processing, and fertiliser trade.
