China watches Brazil presidential race that could shift alignment with Washington

China is closely monitoring Brazil’s presidential race as the election nears, with attention on whether a change in leadership could alter Brazil’s alignment with the United States, according to SCMP Economy.

The outlet said the incumbent, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has maintained close ties with Beijing and is seeking a fourth non-consecutive term, while his challenger, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, is seen as more pro Washington.

SCMP Economy reported that analysts warn a victory for the opposition could mean an “automatic alignment” with Washington, but they expect pragmatic ties with Beijing to endure due to close commercial relations.

SCMP Economy added that in a Monday call arranged at Lula’s request, Xi Jinping told the Brazilian leader that China attaches great importance to Brazil’s international status and its influence.
