Crypto 24/7 derivatives change how traders manage weekend risk

In March, oil-linked weekend activity spilled into crypto perpetual futures, with Hyperliquid active contract value reaching a record $1.2 billion on a Sunday.

CoinDesk highlights how always-on crypto markets are forcing Wall Street traders to rethink a long-standing assumption that weekends are for waiting, as they can no longer treat Friday to Sunday as a full risk blackout.

According to the outlet, traders typically gauge how much risk they can tolerate until markets reopen Sunday evening, because unexpected events during closures can leave positions tied to actively traded markets stuck without the ability to rebalance.

The article points to a shift during March when tensions escalated between Iran and Israel, and oil-linked futures saw a sudden weekend spike in volume despite commodity markets being closed.

Instead of waiting for reopening, traders moved to crypto exchanges and derivatives called perpetual futures that run around the clock, with Hyperliquid reaching a record $1.2 billion in total value of active contracts on March 8, and the outlet says this showed a broader emergence of 24/7 venues for oil derivative trading.
