ECB official says inflation target around 2% remains priority
EUR/USD was little changed after the remarks, trading about 0.3% higher slightly above 1.1400, as the ECB signaled it will weigh the energy shock’s duration and impact using upcoming data.
European Central Bank Governing Council member Ante Žigman said the ECB is committed to keeping medium-term inflation stable around its 2% goal, while highlighting that the central bank will stay alert to how long and how strongly an energy shock affects the euro zone economy.
Žigman said uncertainty remains high and that the energy shock’s impact will be more visible in the coming months, with the ECB’s next decisions to be made based on data and projections received over the following weeks.
Following the interview, there was no immediate reaction in the euro. At the time of publication, EUR/USD was trading about 0.3% higher, slightly above 1.1400.
The remarks also reiterated that euro zone monetary policy decisions are data driven, with the ECB’s mandate focused on price stability and interest rate decisions used to steer inflation and broader economic conditions.
