Ex-Hong Kong opposition leader appeals UK admission decision

Former Hong Kong opposition leader Wu Chi-wai has appealed the UK government’s decision to grant him only seven days of temporary admission, according to the South China Morning Post. The decision requires him to leave the country by Wednesday.

The outlet reports that Wu wrote to the British Home Office asking it to reconsider, and that he could seek a judicial review if the appeal is rejected. A source said judicial review is possible when there are grounds to think the Home Office got the law wrong, though it would be “cumbersome and expensive” and used as a last resort.

Wu received temporary admission after being refused entry at London Heathrow Airport last week, the SCMP says. The outlet adds that Wu was released from a Hong Kong prison in late June after serving four years and five months in a landmark subversion case tied to his role in a 2020 unofficial primary election.

According to the report, Wu is considering applying for the British National (Overseas) pathway to UK citizenship rather than seeking asylum, to reunite with family already in Britain. The source also said immigration officers may have misunderstood the rules when they initially denied him entry.
