France and Spain mobilize firefighters as wildfires threaten Bordeaux

Authorities say about 220,000 people were evacuated in France, while roughly 100,000 have been told to leave homes in Spain as another heatwave approaches.

Firefighters in France and Spain are racing to contain major wildfires as more favorable weather temporarily helps operations, but another heatwave is expected to arrive later this week, according to Reuters. The fires threaten the French city and tourist region of Bordeaux and multiple sites across neighboring Spain.

In France, authorities have evacuated about 220,000 people, including holidaymakers and local residents. In Spain, around 100,000 people have been told to leave their homes or seek shelter.

French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu described the country as facing an unprecedented fire season and said the area burned already exceeds the previous record year of 2022. He also argued that most fires are human-caused, citing examples including cigarette butts, barbecues, and work carried out without precaution.

Reuters also reported that firefighters faced heightened danger in Spain's Vall d’Uixo, in the eastern Castellon province, where the ground contains old ordnance from the Spanish Civil War that can explode if flames reach the area.
