Japan weighs foreign bank funding for $33 billion U.S. natural gas plan
The Japanese finance ministry said foreign loans could be guaranteed by export credit agency NEXI, helping secure the foreign-currency funding for the natural gas investment initiative.
Japan is considering approaching foreign banks to help finance pledged investments in U.S. natural gas production tied to a trade deal with the Trump administration, according to OilPrice citing statements from Japan’s finance ministry.
The planned natural gas commitment totals about $33 billion, including work aimed at building the world’s largest natural gas power plant, with a capacity of 9.2 GW, as previously reported.
OilPrice reports that the finance ministry said any financing from foreign banks would further support procurement of foreign-currency funding needed to implement the initiative.
The outlet also said Japan’s export credit agency, NEXI, could provide guarantees for loans from foreign banks, while part of the infrastructure investment would be financed through Japan’s state-backed Bank for International Cooperation.
