North Korea rebukes ASEAN after denuclearisation call
Kim Yo-jong criticized ASEAN for aligning with US framing on denuclearisation, saying the forum should not be used as a mouthpiece.
South China Morning Post reports that Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, issued a rare rebuke of ASEAN, arguing the bloc is losing relevance to the nuclear-armed state.
According to the outlet, Kim condemned ASEAN’s call for North Korea’s denuclearisation, saying the statement “distorted the essence” of the situation on the Korean peninsula. The comments came after ASEAN expressed “grave concern” at the annual Asean Regional Forum in the Philippines last Thursday over North Korea’s nuclear weapon and missile development.
The forum also urged parties to resume peaceful dialogue to achieve lasting peace and stability on a denuclearised Korean peninsula. Kim Yo-jong said she was strongly dissatisfied with what she called the forum’s hostile attitude and warned it should not be used as a hired mouthpiece for the US.
