QBE Re leans into long term reinsurance partnerships and selective capacity

The reinsurer said its growth focus includes North America, with additional opportunities it sees in Asia, Credit, Structured Reinsurance, and Specialty lines.

QBE Re is emphasizing a strategy of building deeper, long-term relationships with a smaller set of key reinsurance partners, rather than expanding broadly across the market, according to an interview with Reinsurance News.

Nick Hankin, Managing Director at QBE Re, said the approach makes QBE Re more selective about where it deploys capacity, with success depending on consistency and predictability across the insurance cycle. He also noted clients increasingly expect reinsurers to show up consistently across products and over multiple years, instead of taking a more isolated view at each renewal.

Hankin said QBE Re has made progress by becoming relevant to a core group of global and key clients, creating opportunities to grow alongside them across products and geographies. He added that the firm wants to understand client portfolios over time, including where clients are growing and how their reinsurance needs are evolving.

Alongside its partnership model, QBE Re plans sustainable growth in targeted areas, with Hankin pointing to continued business growth in North America and potential expansion in Asia, as well as areas including Credit, Structured Reinsurance, and Specialty lines. He said growth in Casualty requires discipline, and that QBE Re will only grow where underlying economics are sound and align with its client strategy.
