China invites public tips in Liulan Reservoir dam collapse probe
Submissions are accepted until Aug. 15 as part of a State Council-led investigation into the July 6 collapse in Guangxi that killed hundreds.
China has opened a public call for information as part of an investigation into a deadly reservoir dam collapse in southern China earlier this month. According to SCMP Economy, state media said people can submit clues related to the Liulan Reservoir collapse in Hengzhou, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, using a dedicated telephone hotline.
The probe, led by an investigation and assessment work group from the State Council, aims to reconstruct the sequence of events, determine the disaster’s causes, and review shortcomings and responsibilities across disaster prevention, emergency response, and rescue efforts. Guangxi Daily, as cited by SCMP Economy, reported that the group also plans to draw lessons to help prevent similar incidents.
SCMP Economy said the submission window runs through Aug. 15. It also noted that the government has used similar public appeals in past State Council investigations following disasters and industrial accidents that caused heavy casualties and drew widespread public concern.
The report cited prior precedents including 2021 floods in Zhengzhou, which killed more than 300 people, and the May gas explosion at the Shenyu coal mine in Shanxi, which left 82 workers dead.
