China tightens rules on selling decommissioned military equipment

China has tightened rules governing the sale of decommissioned military equipment, aiming to prevent unauthorized channels that officials say can create security risks and damage the PLA's image, according to an administrative notice issued by multiple state bodies. The notice, published internally last week and made public on Tuesday, covers a broad range of items including uniforms, machinery, components and ammunition that have been formally withdrawn from service and designated for disposal. While China already has laws on the sale or transfer of equipment and weapons, those provisions are described as broadly worded. The new guidance adds clearer restrictions, including a ban on commercial promotion of decommissioned equipment and imitations that could be mistaken by the public for military equipment.

SCMP Economy reports that offenders under existing criminal law can face up to 10 years in prison.
