EthSystems targets bank privacy as a path to public Ethereum use

The Ethereum Foundation spinout says banks are moving from pilots to production deployments and need controls over who can see sensitive transaction data while still settling on Ethereum.

Ethereum Foundation spinout EthSystems is building privacy infrastructure aimed at banks and other financial institutions, arguing that confidentiality, not scalability, is the main barrier to bringing real-world financial activity onto public Ethereum. The startup was spun out earlier this month from the Ethereum Foundation’s Institutional Privacy Task Force, with a focus on privacy-preserving tools that can support public blockchain settlement while meeting regulatory requirements.

Founder Mo Jalil said institutional demand has shifted from experimental blockchain pilots to production deployments, and that banks increasingly want transaction privacy that satisfies compliance needs. EthSystems is approaching this by helping institutions deploy privacy technologies that keep sensitive transaction data confidential while still settling on Ethereum.

Rather than creating a new blockchain, the company advises clients on privacy architecture, builds custom infrastructure when needed, and plans to publish open-source research on institutional blockchain adoption. It also says it intends to work alongside existing privacy projects, rather than compete directly, and is exploring solutions for use cases including tokenized assets, stablecoins, and other financial applications.

EthSystems highlighted that confidentiality does not necessarily mean transactions must be anonymous, according to Jalil. The company said institutions generally need controls over who sees what, when, and how, and that its work is designed to provide those controls for enterprise adoption of Ethereum.
