Galaxy and MARA expand Texas footprint with land deals for AI and mining
Galaxy will develop a 500-acre McGregor site with 74 MW of planned power at launch, while MARA agreed to buy a 1,200-acre Matagorda County site with up to 2 GW available.
Cointelegraph reports that Galaxy Digital and MARA Holdings are deepening their Texas expansion with separate land acquisitions aimed at AI, high performance computing and, for MARA, Bitcoin mining infrastructure.
Galaxy said it acquired a 500-acre site in McGregor, Texas, to build its second AI and HPC data center campus in the state, with the project expected to launch using 74 megawatts of power before later phases expand capacity.
MARA separately agreed to acquire a 1,200-acre powered site in Matagorda County with access to up to 2 gigawatts of power capacity, which it plans to develop for AI and HPC workloads as well as Bitcoin mining.
The announcements came the same day Meta Platforms disclosed plans for a $14 billion AI data center campus in El Paso, underscoring what Cointelegraph describes as a wave of large scale infrastructure investment in Texas. The companies cited Texas as a key destination for data center and crypto infrastructure projects due to its power market, relatively low electricity costs, and availability of land, along with the ERCOT grid.
Texas’s independent ERCOT grid is also drawing developers seeking access to substantial power capacity, supporting continued competition for large sites that can accommodate energy intensive compute.
