Keiko Fujimori sworn in as Peru president after narrow election win
Fujimori, who won the June runoff by fewer than 50,000 votes, is set to govern until 2031 amid efforts to curb extortion and crime.
Keiko Fujimori was sworn in as Peru’s ninth president in a decade at an official ceremony in Lima on Tuesday, according to Agence France-Presse, as the conservative 51-year-old prepares to stabilize a turbulent political period.
Fujimori won the June runoff by fewer than 50,000 votes and will govern until 2031. Over the past decade, only three of Peru’s presidents have been elected by popular vote, with others taking office after resignations or removals by Congress amid corruption scandals, the outlet reported.
The new administration arrives as Fujimori’s Popular Force party and its main ally will hold half of the Senate seats in the incoming legislature, a setup that could make it harder for lawmakers to remove the president.
In her campaign, Fujimori focused on security and crime, including promises to improve security where extortion rackets have become significant, and to develop infrastructure by making it easier for government agencies to form partnerships with private investors, AFP said. She also said she would fight crime with an “iron fist,” including a megaprison modeled after El Salvador’s Cecot jail and plans for judges to hide their identities during criminal trials for their safety.
