Myanmar approves death penalty for online scam center coercion
The approved law keeps capital punishment tied to cases involving violence, unlawful detention, or coercion of victims into online scam work.
Myanmar’s military-backed parliament has approved an “Anti-Online Scam Bill” that authorizes capital punishment for people who detain, torture, or violently coerce others into working in online scam centres, the speaker said Tuesday, according to Agence France-Presse.
The bill was passed after MPs approved changes to a draft measure at a joint session of the lower and upper houses in Naypyidaw. The death sentence remained in the final version, a lower house MP confirmed to AFP.
Earlier draft legislation published in May outlined prison terms ranging from 10 years to life, as well as capital punishment, for violence and cruel treatment carried out to force people to commit online scams. It also specified that if an offence causes death, the death penalty shall be imposed.
