Protests in Libya threaten Mellitah gas exports and oil output

Protesters have moved into the Mellitah Gas processing plant and may disrupt natural gas exports to Italy, raising the risk of supply interruptions beyond Libya’s domestic market.

Anti government protests in Libya have escalated, with demonstrators entering the Mellitah Oil and Gas complex and threatening to halt gas and fuel supplies for both domestic consumption and international deliveries, OilPrice reports.

The unrest was sparked by power cuts and high electricity bills, with protesters in Tripoli blocking roads and spreading the demonstrations to the Mellitah Gas processing plant.

Protesters are reportedly trying to stop natural gas exports to Italy via a pipeline as a way to intensify pressure on the Government of National Unity led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibah.

As of Tuesday morning local time, it was unclear whether supplies had been fully halted, but any disruption would be a blow to Libya’s hydrocarbon revival, which had been restarting after years of civil war, the outlet added.
