Tech selloff reflects AI CapEx debate as analysts point to energy

Altimetry says AI hyperscalers are capacity constrained, and it frames sector rotation as part of a broader leadership churn favoring energy over lagging telecom and streaming.

MarketBeat Ratings highlights Altimetry director of research Rob Spivey’s view that the recent drawdown in Alphabet and Tesla is less about a clear AI spending verdict and more about investors reacting to a CapEx cycle. He argues the market struggles to reconcile concerns that Alphabet is spending too much on AI infrastructure with the fear that Tesla is spending too little.

Spivey says his team evaluates two questions when CapEx plans face criticism: whether there is underlying demand for the spend and whether companies can actually finance it. In his assessment, hyperscalers have indicated they remain capacity constrained rather than overextended, which he says undercuts the idea that the AI buildout is being mishandled.

He adds that sector leadership rarely repeats year to year, with communication services, tech hardware, and industrials shifting as leadership changes. Spivey’s research points to energy as the sector the market is overlooking, saying about 65% of U.S. market capitalization ties to AI in some form.

Altimetry connects some of energy’s recent strength to headlines out of Iran and the Red Sea, but characterizes geopolitics as a premium layered on top of a structural shift. The firm argues the U.S. needs more natural gas for AI data centers and for ramping LNG exports, while oil’s geopolitical support raises the effective price floor that improves drilling economics for previously cautious shale producers.
