HKU to begin global search for next president after 2028 exit

The university said the search is led by its governing council, with the current president set to leave after a second five-year term ending in 2028.

The University of Hong Kong will launch a global recruitment process for its next leader to steer the institution toward “fresh ideas” and an upcoming “transformation,” according to the South China Morning Post.

HKU council chairman Peter Wong Tung-shun said the council will handle the search and oversee the recruitment, following president and vice-chancellor Xiang Zhang’s decision to step down in 2028 after completing a second five-year term.

Wong said universities must pursue breakthroughs amid changing societal needs, adding that the transition is intended to guide HKU through its planned transformation.

The paper reported that a source said council members praised Zhang’s contributions during discussions and shook hands with him at the end of the one-hour meeting.
