Xi tells Slovak president to explore AI and clean energy ties

The outreach comes as Slovakia seeks ways to manage EU trade friction and tensions between Beijing and European policymakers.

China’s President Xi Jinping urged Slovakia to expand cooperation in clean energy, robotics, and artificial intelligence during talks with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini in Beijing on Tuesday, as trade tensions between China and the European Union intensify.

The meeting was part of Pellegrini’s three day visit to China, the first by a Slovak head of state in 16 years, highlighting the special role of Slovakia in EU relations with Beijing.

The source says Slovakia has relatively warm ties with China, including its status as one of the few EU and Nato members to have established a strategic partnership with Beijing, a relationship strengthened during Prime Minister Robert Fico’s Beijing visit in November 2024.

The article also links the push toward closer engagement to broader shifts in Europe’s approach to China, including cracks in the transatlantic relationship under the second Trump administration and its trade policies.
