China tops US in favorable perceptions among young Africans, survey finds
In a survey of 4,901 youths aged 18 to 24 across 16 African countries, 79.0% said China was influential versus 81.0% for the US, and favorable views of China jumped to 95% among those citing it as influential.
China is gaining ground on the US in positive perceptions among young Africans, according to the African Youth Survey, published Wednesday by the Ichikowitz Family Foundation.
The survey polled 4,901 respondents aged 18 to 24, split equally between males and females, across 16 of Africa’s 54 countries on which foreign powers had influence in their countries. It found 81.0% agreed the US was influential, while 79.0% said China was influential.
The report also pointed to higher favorable sentiment among those who named each power as influential. Among respondents who identified China as influential, 95.0% expressed favorable views of China, compared with 85.0% for the US.
The survey, conducted by PSB Insights, said favorable views of China rose from 76.0% in the 2022 edition to the current level, and that 95.0% of those who saw China as influential viewed it as an ally, versus 88.0% for the US. Ichikowitz attributed much of the shift toward China to Chinese physical accomplishments across Africa.
