EU to provide €15 million maritime aid to the Philippines
The funding will support surveillance and monitoring to strengthen the Philippines’ maritime domain awareness under the European Peace Facility.
The European Union is upgrading its partnership with the Philippines by providing a €15 million (US$17 million) assistance package focused on maritime security. The support will be delivered through the European Peace Facility, with the aim of strengthening Philippine surveillance and monitoring capabilities.
SCMP Economy reports the aid is intended to improve the Philippines’ maritime domain awareness. Analysts cited in the report said the move signals Brussels is looking to broaden its Indo-Pacific strategy beyond trade into the security arena.
According to SCMP Economy, officials described the program as the first European Peace Facility support implemented in the Indo-Pacific. The piece also frames the Philippines as a potential test case for expanding the EU’s Indo-Pacific approach from a connectivity agenda into a more geopolitical one.
