IPL brand value tops $20.6bn after major franchise ownership deals

The IPL’s per-match brand ranking puts it second only to the NFL, with the league expected to generate more than $11bn a year for India’s economy as of 2020.

The Indian Premier League’s brand value has risen to an estimated $20.6 billion, surpassing $20 billion for the first time and tightening its position among the world’s most valuable sports brands, according to a report by investment bank Houlihan Lokey.

Houlihan Lokey said the T20 league’s value increased 10.3% over the past year, citing franchise ownership deals involving two of its biggest teams. The report also highlighted that on a per-match basis only the NFL ranks ahead of the IPL globally.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru retained its status as the league’s most valuable franchise, with a brand value of $312 million. The team was acquired in a deal worth nearly $1.8 billion that included a consortium featuring US asset manager Blackstone.

The report said Rajasthan Royals changed hands in a transaction valued at $1.65 billion, with control shifting to a group that includes Indian steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal and his family, along with SII vaccine billionaire Adar Poonawalla.

Houlihan Lokey’s Harsh Talikoti said the recent transactions reflect continued investor confidence in the IPL’s long term value creation, pointing to how the league has become a top revenue earner for India’s cricket board and was estimated to generate more than $11 billion a year for India’s economy in 2020.
