NYC issues partial stop-work order on SL Green conversion at 750 Third Ave
The DOB halted all steel work above the eighth floor at the 34-story site, tied to an on-site condition that differed from plans submitted to the city.
New York City’s Department of Buildings has issued a partial stop-work order covering construction at SL Green Realty’s office-to-residential conversion project at 750 Third Avenue in Midtown East, according to Commercial Observer. The order pauses all steel work above the eighth floor at the 34-story property, as inspectors found an on-site condition that differed from the plans submitted to the city. The project is described as a conversion that would produce 680 residential units and potentially add 11 floors.
The halt comes amid wider scrutiny following a near-collapse of the former Pfizer headquarters earlier in July, when steel beams at nearby projects buckled and led to the evacuation of 10 Midtown blocks. Commercial Observer also notes that a separate conversion project, GFP Real Estate’s 222 Broadway site in the Financial District, was stopped earlier this week after cracks were found on a newly added floor.
In a statement provided to Commercial Observer, an SL Green spokesperson said there are no structural issues with the building, and the company is working with the licensed professional engineer of record to address the condition. The spokesperson added that SL Green does not anticipate an impact to the overall project schedule and has requested that the city rescind the partial stop-work order, while the New York Times reported the DOB issued 7,000 such stops in 2025.
