Brazil leads in Chinese car imports ahead of July tariff change

Brazil imported US$5.2 billion of Chinese vehicles in the first five months of the year, up 146.9% from a year earlier, with electrified models driving most of the surge.

Brazil has overtaken Russia and Belgium to become the world’s top importer of Chinese cars in the first five months of the year, taking US$5.2 billion worth of vehicles, according to Chinese customs data cited by SCMP Economy.

That total represents a 146.9% jump from US$2.1 billion in the same period last year, and the outlet reports the timing suggests stockpiling ahead of a July tariff increase rather than purely sustained demand, with April and May alone accounting for US$2.7 billion.

Electrified vehicles are at the center of the surge, with electric and hybrid models totaling US$4.5 billion of Brazil’s Chinese car imports, and making up 87% of the mix last year versus 33% in 2021.

SCMP Economy also notes Brazil ranked first globally for electric and hybrid vehicle imports specifically, ahead of Belgium and Britain, and that first-half purchases were compiled at US$5.35 billion by figures drawn from Brazil foreign trade data.
