Trump unveils $22 billion overhaul plan for Washington Dulles airport
The renovation would add or renovate 5 million square feet of space and is set to be funded through municipal bonds, amid questions about potential flight costs.
US President Donald Trump unveiled a US$22 billion plan to rebuild Washington Dulles International Airport, proposing to replace concourses and add a large parking garage while preserving the landmark main terminal, Reuters reported. The project targets Dulles, the main international gateway for the Washington, DC region.
The plan calls for 5 million square feet of new or renovated airport space. Trump said the airport needed a major, long overdue renovation, and the announcement was made alongside United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy at the White House.
The overhaul is expected to be funded through municipal bonds, according to Reuters, though it also raises questions about what the funding structure could mean for the cost of flights. The airport authority previously approved a separate US$7 billion capital plan for Dulles.
