US Senate confirms Jay Clayton as Trump’s intelligence chief
The confirmation was approved 51-47, with all Democrats voting against, as Clayton takes over after Tulsi Gabbard’s resignation.
The US Senate confirmed Jay Clayton as Donald Trump’s top intelligence official, establishing a permanent leader for the US intelligence community, according to SCMP Economy.
Senators voted 51-47 to approve Clayton, with all Democrats in the upper chamber opposing the appointment. Clayton succeeds Tulsi Gabbard, who resigned last month.
SCMP Economy reports that Clayton inherits an 18-agency intelligence community amid leadership turnover and staff cuts, and that his appointment comes as concerns rise that the administration could draw national security agencies into efforts to revisit the 2020 election and raise doubts about the integrity of the coming vote.
The outlet also notes that Trump has been releasing declassified intelligence tied to alleged foreign interference, and has again repeated unfounded claims that the 2020 election was stolen.
