Anwar Ibrahim highlights Tabung Haji probe ahead of Negeri Sembilan vote

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has leaned on the release of a long-delayed investigation into the country’s Islamic pilgrimage fund, Tabung Haji, as he faces a fast-approaching state election in Negeri Sembilan, according to the SCMP Economy.

The inquiry, established in 2021 as a Royal Commission of Inquiry, was set up to examine how Tabung Haji managed and operated from 2014 to 2020 after independent reviews flagged governance concerns.

Tabung Haji, created in 1963 to help Muslims save and invest for the haj pilgrimage to Mecca, is described as one of Malaysia’s largest Islamic financial institutions and a key player in organising Malaysia’s annual haj.

SCMP Economy said the move is seen as an attempt by Anwar’s Pakatan Harapan coalition to press an anti-corruption message ahead of the vote, as political alliances remain fragile between parties that compete in state polls but govern together federally.
