East Timor advances war crimes case against Myanmar junta
The Myanmar case has moved into its judicial phase after the appointment of a senior prosecutor in Dili.
East Timor has become the venue for a war crimes case targeting Myanmar’s military leadership, with proceedings advancing in courts in Dili, according to the SCMP Economy.
The case, brought by the Chin Human Rights Organisation (CHRO), is expected to put Asean’s non-interference approach to the junta under pressure, as the matter plays out through legal steps rather than political timelines.
SCMP Economy reports that CHRO executive director Salai Za Uk Ling said the case reached its judicial phase following the appointment of a senior prosecutor.
The outlet also notes that victim representatives have submitted questions of law for judicial determination, and those questions are currently under the court’s consideration.
