Fierce winds in Brazil kill five and disrupt transit across Rio

Gusts of up to 111 km/h damaged areas around Santos and disrupted operations at multiple airports, including a roughly two-hour suspension at Santos Dumont Airport.

South China Morning Post, citing an Agence France-Presse dispatch, said five people died after powerful gusts of wind in Brazil brought chaos to Rio de Janeiro and parts of Sao Paulo state, including widespread power cuts and transport disruptions.

The report said winds reached as high as 100 km/h in Rio just before rush hour, felling dozens of trees and leaving thousands stranded as all three of the city’s subway queues ground to a halt.

In Rio, the fire department said two deaths were linked to a wall collapse, and a fisherman was reported missing in the coastal town of Tarituba. In Santos, local authorities said gusts of up to 111 km/h caused widespread damage and a homeless person was killed by a fallen tree.

Operations were also affected at several major airports in Rio and Sao Paulo, with Santos Dumont Airport, which serves mostly domestic flights, suspending operations for about two hours.
