IBM claims 'trusted quantum advantage' using 70 logical qubits
IBM says its experiment completed a computation in about 15 minutes, using an approach it says helps address verification challenges in quantum advantage tests.
IBM says it has demonstrated what it calls a “trusted quantum advantage” by running an experiment with 70 logical qubits, paired with a new error-correction method.
According to Decrypt, the work completed a computation that IBM says was beyond the reach of leading classical simulation methods, while also generating statistical evidence intended to support that the result was accurate. The experiment was carried out with researchers at the University of Chicago as part of IBM’s push toward fault-tolerant quantum computing.
IBM said the trial encoded the 70 logical qubits and finished in roughly 15 minutes, a timeframe it characterized as impractical for today’s leading classical simulation approaches. The experiment reportedly executed 2,415 logical two-qubit operations and 468 logical T gates, while reducing logical error rates to about one-tenth of the underlying physical error rate.
The announcement includes a focus on verification, Decrypt reports, with IBM describing a structured alternative to random circuit sampling that aims to detect errors during computation while preserving the mathematical difficulty of the task. IBM also said the results do not materially change Bitcoin’s near-term security outlook.
