Iran says two oil tankers turned back after fire during Hormuz attempt
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said one tanker fire led both vessels to reverse, amid resumed attacks in the Strait of Hormuz.
OilPrice reports that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said two oil tankers that had attempted to transit the Strait of Hormuz with U.S. support via the southern lane close to Oman turned back after a major fire broke out on one vessel.
According to the IRGC statement carried by AFP, after the fire started on one tanker, both vessels quickly reversed course. The IRGC cited the southern lane hugging Oman’s coast as the route it deems unsafe for transit.
OilPrice adds that Iran has struck vessels transiting the southern lane since a ceasefire collapsed, and that many ships have transited with transponders off to avoid detection, amid renewed hostilities.
The outlet also notes that tanker operators have largely stopped attempts to transit the Strait of Hormuz since the fighting returned, and that the U.S. Central Command said it completed a heavy wave of strikes against IRGC targets in Iran late on Wednesday.
