PayPal shows bearish technical signal after a strong July run
The stock is up 4.7% to $58.72, after gaining 35% since the start of July, and indicators point to potential downside toward its year-to-date breakeven level.
PayPal Holdings shares are trading higher for a third win in the past four sessions, but Yahoo Finance highlights a bearish technical setup that could precede a pullback. The stock was up 4.7% to $58.72 as of July 28, 2026, following a 35% gain since the start of July.
According to Schaeffer's Senior Quantitative Analyst Rocky White, PayPal is trading within 0.75 of the 100-day moving average's 100-day average true range, after staying below that threshold 80% of the time over the past two weeks and 80% of the last 42 trading sessions. Yahoo Finance notes this bearish signal has appeared four times in the last 10 years, and in those instances the shares were lower one month later 33% of the time, with an average 5.4% decline.
The analysis also points to momentum risk, with PayPal's 14-day Relative Strength Index reading 79.2, placing it deep in overbought territory. Yahoo Finance adds that, from current levels, a pullback could put the shares back below their year-to-date breakeven point.
Finally, the report cites Schaeffer's Volatility Scorecard, which it says is 74 out of 100, implying the stock has realized higher volatility than what options have priced over the past 12 months.
