Sildenafil shows potential to curb cancer metastasis in research

Scientists at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Tel Aviv have reported indications that sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, may help curb cancer metastasis, according to research covered by dpa via SCMP Economy.
The researchers said sildenafil reduces cancer cells ability to use cholesterol, which they describe as essential for forming cellular membranes, and they linked limited cholesterol access to a harder time for cells to form metastases.
The article also notes the potential to boost sildenafil’s anti-metastasis effect by using it in combination with statins, which are widely taken medications that limit cholesterol production.
