Spain deploys military to restore order in Ceuta after border breaches
Spain said it will send the Armed Forces to support the Civil Guard, after local authorities in Ceuta requested reinforcements from Madrid to manage the border crisis.
Spain will deploy its military to restore order at its border with Morocco in Ceuta after thousands of migrants streamed into the Spanish territory, according to SCMP Economy citing an Associated Press update.
Spain’s government said it would send the Armed Forces to help the Civil Guard “to maintain security in the city of Ceuta,” after large crowds breached the border fence and the situation escalated on Thursday.
SCMP Economy also reported that local authorities in Ceuta had asked Spain’s central government in Madrid for reinforcements to handle the growing border crisis.
The outlet said Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will join Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska and visit Ceuta on Friday, as a Civil Guard officers’ association head described conditions as “absolute chaos.”
