Trump signals disappointment over Xi if China aids Iran
The remarks came as Fauci testified before a Senate committee and Reuters reported Iran is expected to receive 300 to 400 Chinese-made shoulder-fired air defense systems under a $60 million to $70 million deal.
South China Morning Post reports that US President Donald Trump said he would be “quite disappointed” if Chinese President Xi Jinping breaks what Trump described as a personal promise not to arm Iran. Trump linked the comments to a separate dispute over the origins of Covid-19, reviving his accusation that Anthony Fauci, who led the US pandemic response, helped shield Beijing from scrutiny.
The outlet also said Fauci appeared before a Senate committee. Separately, Reuters reported that Iran is expected to receive 300 to 400 Chinese-made shoulder-fired air defense missile systems within weeks, with the weapons reportedly flown from western China through Pakistan under a deal valued at US$60 million to US$70 million.
SCMP added that Beijing previously rejected an earlier report on China supplying weapons to Iran as “completely groundless” ahead of Trump’s May visit. When asked about the latest report, Trump said it would be “surprising,” and reiterated that Xi told him very strongly he would not partake.
