US sanctions China-linked firms tied to Iran carrier Mahan Air
The Treasury said Shanghai Wings International Logistics coordinated shipments of electronics from China to Iran, and sanctions include US asset freezes and a general ban on Americans doing business with the designated parties.
The United States sanctioned two China-based companies and a Chinese executive on allegations of support for Iran’s Mahan Air, which the US government described as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ airline of choice for transporting weapons, military personnel, and equipment, according to SCMP Economy.
The US Treasury said Shanghai Wings International Logistics served as a general sales agent for Mahan Air and coordinated the transportation of electronics from China to Iran. It also sanctioned the carrier’s managing director, Tang Xin, accusing him of coordinating travel for Mahan Air.
Treasury also designated Shanghai Elite International Travel Co due to its ownership and links to Tang, who is described by the outlet as an executive director and 50% owner of the travel company that represents Mahan Air in China.
The sanctions freeze any assets the designated parties hold in the United States or under US control and generally bar Americans from doing business with them, with SCMP Economy noting that secondary sanctions could apply to foreign financial institutions that knowingly facilitate significant transactions.
