West Bengal will resume eggs in free school meals next month
The reversal follows backlash over a prior plan to swap eggs for vegetarian alternatives, with officials saying eggs will return starting next month.
West Bengal will bring eggs back to free school meals after criticism of a prior decision to replace eggs with vegetarian alternatives, officials said. The change comes after teachers, nutritionists, and parents argued that removing eggs could reduce protein intake for children from poorer families.
According to Agence France Presse, the policy reversal reignited debate in India over food and religion, with critics accusing the Hindu nationalist government of trying to make schoolchildren vegetarian.
On Wednesday, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said eggs would again be provided to schoolchildren from next month, reversing the earlier approach.
