World Cup drew $20B in blockchain prediction market volume, Chainalysis says
Chainalysis estimated $5.7B in wagers over the five-week tournament and found fewer than 1% of participating wallets tied to illicit actors.
Chainalysis said the 2026 FIFA World Cup generated $20 billion in blockchain-based prediction market volume and $24 million in digital collectible trades, as fans used blockchain betting and collectible platforms during the tournament, according to Cointelegraph.
The analytics firm said the $20 billion total included trading before and during the event, with bettors placing about $5.7 billion in wagers over the five-week World Cup. It also reported that World Cup-related markets accounted for roughly 63% of all prediction market activity during that period.
Chainalysis found participation was global, with users from every continent except Antarctica, and identified the United States and China as the largest sources of attributable trading volume, followed by Canada, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.
Despite the scale, Chainalysis said illicit participation was limited, with fewer than 1% of wallets involved in World Cup prediction markets having ties to illicit actors. It also reported about $5.4 million in flows originating from sanctioned entities and other illicit sources, while wallets linked to sanctioned entities accounted for less than 0.01% of FIFA Collect users, which it attributed in part to identity verification requirements.
