EU launches enforcement team for AI deepfakes, illicit content and cyber risk
The EU’s AI Act takes effect on Sunday, requiring AI chatbots and imagery to be labeled or watermarked so consumers can tell they are generated with AI.
The European Union has launched a new enforcement team to rein in AI companies across the world, as Brussels prepares to begin applying one of the most aggressive rules yet aimed at the fast growing technology, according to SCMP Economy.
The European Commission said the effort will focus on violations that include the publication of sexually explicit material and fake images and videos, as well as cyber threats to public infrastructure, with the bloc also looking at systemic risks such as cyber attacks and harmful manipulation.
When the EU’s AI Act comes into force on Sunday, AI companies will be required to make clear to consumers through labels or digital watermarks whether chatbots or imagery are generated with AI.
EU tech sovereignty chief Henna Virkkunen said the enforcement start is intended to support AI that people and businesses can understand and trust, and the Commission cited risks ranging from threats to fundamental rights to incidents involving chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear hazards.
