Japan’s JERA says LNG supplies cover peak summer demand through October

JERA said it has enough liquefied natural gas from August to October to support stable power supply during peak air-conditioning demand, while reducing LNG purchases from Qatar.

OilPrice reported that Japan’s biggest liquefied natural gas buyer, JERA, told Channel News Asia it has secured enough LNG stocks to cover peak summer demand from August through October, with no expected risk of summer power shortages during high air-conditioning use.

According to the outlet, the executive said there are no issues regarding stable power supply for the season, as Japan, an energy-import dependent country, has sought alternative LNG sources amid disruption to Middle East export flows.

OilPrice added that JERA has reduced LNG purchases from Qatar and plans to ensure adequate supply for winter through its global trading division.

The report also noted that JERA has signed a 20-year LNG supply contract with Malaysia’s Petronas for 2 million tons annually, with deliveries set to begin in 2028.
