Metronome discloses $15.7 million msETH and msUSD synth shortfall
Metronome says unbacked float accumulated after trading bots exploited delayed Chainlink price data in its swap module, potentially shifting losses to liquidity providers if token prices move.
MetronomeDAO disclosed that about 6,367 msETH and 4.57 million msUSD in circulation, worth roughly $15.7 million at current prices, lack collateral behind them after an attack that exploited delayed price data in the protocol’s swap feature, according to a post-mortem shared July 30 and covered by The Defiant.
The disclosed gap equals around 31% of all msETH and 16% of all msUSD in existence. Metronome said the damage is confined to the swap module, and that its Morpho lending markets, MetBasis product, and the core minting protocol are operating normally.
Metronome attributed the shortfall to latency in its oracle-driven swap pricing. The protocol reads ETH/USD from Chainlink, but the feed updates only when market moves exceed thresholds, or after set time intervals, leaving periods when the on-chain price can lag the real market by minutes.
Metronome said trading bots monitored both prices and swapped when the stale oracle underpriced one synth, building what it calls “unbacked float” that is not matched by a corresponding debt position. It also said it has staged $34 million in defensive positions to close the gap; msETH was down 25% over the last 24 hours to $1,378, while msUSD traded about 25% below $1 at $0.737.
