Pound slides vs dollar after hawkish Fed pause sparks FX debate
GBP/USD traded around 1.3450 during Asian hours after HSBC pointed to a 9-3 FOMC vote that showed internal disagreement despite rates staying unchanged.
The British pound fell against the US dollar, with GBP/USD losing ground after three straight sessions of gains and trading around 1.3450 in Asian hours on Friday, FXStreet reported.
The move was tied to renewed support for the dollar, as a hawkish pause by the Federal Reserve helped anchor USD. HSBC noted that the Fed left interest rates unchanged for a fifth consecutive meeting, but emphasized that a 9-3 vote highlighted a lively debate within the FOMC over the appropriate policy path.
Looking ahead, the pair could rebound if safe-haven demand for the dollar eases. FXStreet also pointed to a reduction in Middle East tensions, citing ongoing US-Iran negotiations toward restoring stability in the Strait of Hormuz, and a separate reported diplomatic development involving an agreement tied to the Gaza conflict.
