Snapchat joins platforms pushing back on AI-generated “slop”
Snap acknowledged that fully AI-generated videos and images tend to be low quality and repetitive, and it will still recommend AI enhanced or edited content.
Snapchat has joined other major online platforms in efforts to curb the spread of fully AI generated videos, images and text that are increasingly being labeled as “AI slop.” BBC Business reports that Snapchat’s move follows similar steps from YouTube, LinkedIn and Substack as generative AI tools have made it easier to produce realistic fake content at scale.
Snapchat is not adopting a blanket ban on AI content. Instead, the platform will continue to incorporate AI enhanced or edited material into its recommendations because it also offers its own AI tools, while acknowledging that content created entirely by AI is typically low quality and repetitive, traits that align with audience research cited by the outlet.
BBC Business also notes that research shows the more fake AI content people see in a social media feed, the less likely they are to view what they are seeing as genuine.
On LinkedIn, the platform added a user button to report posts or comments that appear AI generated and said it has blocked billions of attempts to post AI generated comments, while also reverting from an “enhance with AI” prompt to a simpler proofreading tool.
YouTube is also cited as being involved in similar efforts, though the provided material cuts off before detailing its specific approach.
