Suno ordered to license GEMA music for AI training and generation in Germany
The Munich Regional Court said Suno infringed copyright in training its models and generating music using tracks from GEMA’s catalog, and Suno is considering an appeal.
A German court ruled against AI music startup Suno in a copyright case brought by music rights organization GEMA, finding that Suno infringed copyrights by using music from GEMA’s catalog without a license.
The Munich Regional Court said Suno’s conduct covered both training AI models and generating AI music, and it required licenses for the commercial use of GEMA’s repertoire in both stages.
The lawsuit centered on six songs, including "Daddy Cool," "Rasputin," "Forever Young," and "Mambo No. 5," according to the case details.
Suno said it disagrees with the ruling and is evaluating its legal options, arguing its platform is meant to help people create new music and that the court’s decision mischaracterized how its technology works, and the ruling came around eight months after GEMA won a separate copyright case against OpenAI.
