US lawmakers ask DoorDash for details on Chinese Moonshot AI use

The lawmakers also want DoorDash staff tied to AI infrastructure, security, and procurement to brief them in person by August 21.

Prominent US lawmakers have requested information from food delivery company DoorDash about its use of Chinese artificial intelligence models, after DoorDash co-founder disclosed the company had experimented with a model from Moonshot AI, the developer of the Kimi models, according to SCMP Economy.

The lawmakers said US companies may evaluate and deploy PRC developed open weight models because they can offer competitive capabilities, lower costs, greater customization, and an alternative to relying on a small number of proprietary model providers.

The letter asks DoorDash employees with responsibility for AI infrastructure, software security, model evaluation, procurement, and legal or compliance review to appear for an in person briefing with the lawmakers by August 21, highlighting rising tensions between lawmakers and industry as Chinese AI models gain traction among US firms seeking to reduce the cost of AI adoption.
