US Senator Steve Daines to return to Beijing ahead of Xi-Trump summit

SCMP Economy reports that US Senator Steve Daines is expected to return to China for another round of talks ahead of President Xi Jinping’s planned September visit to Washington.

According to people familiar with preparations cited by the outlet, the trip is meant to help finalize the agenda for what both sides hope will be a high-stakes summit involving Xi and President Donald Trump.

Daines, a Montana Republican, has acted as a backchannel figure between Washington and Beijing, after a prior visit to Beijing in May when the two sides sought to stabilize relations ahead of Trump’s trip to the Chinese capital.

The outlet says Daines has been carrying messages and helping narrow differences on issues expected to dominate the summit, with sources describing him as an effective channel for concerns being communicated between both sides as preparations enter their final stretch.
