Explosion at Moscow restaurant kills 3, injures 21, authorities say

Russia’s anti-terrorism committee said the blast was caused by a home-made explosive device, and reported the attempted smuggling by a woman ended in the explosion.

An explosion at a Moscow restaurant on Saturday killed three people and injured 21 others, Russia’s national anti-terrorism committee said, according to Tass.

The state media outlet reported that a home-made explosive device detonated in Kudrinskaya Square, killing an unidentified woman who attempted to carry the device into the restaurant, along with a security guard and a patron.

Ria Novosti reported the woman attempted to smuggle the device into the establishment, but a security guard refused to let her in before the blast.

The authorities did not name the victims or identify any suspected perpetrators. Kommersant, citing its own sources, said the bomb may have been intended to maim and kill guests on the restaurant’s summer terrace, and suggested it may have been triggered remotely.
